I have a rarely used land line that's going to go to the BBS soon - I bought stables and cabling tonight to extend a phone line to the BBS.

I've ranted about the old days before - it was nice getting together with users 4 times a year, at least. Made for a more rewarding, much more civil experience when you knew people face-to-face.

Couldn't believe the first time I read this that VoIP works with old modems. I ¨have an Courier 3453C model I got off ebay, but it doesn't seem to be ¨responding. Sad because it looks brand new. Did a ton of troubleshooting, but ¨no luck. Maybe it's because I'm running Virtual XP? Either that or the serial ¨port on my mobo is crap. I may have to borrow a USB->RS232 adapter and try ¨that.

I miss those old connect sounds.

I have a big question, does fiber work with old modems namely verzion fios?

Can you plug a fiber line into a POTS modem and have it work, hell no. haha

Can you take your modem and plug it into your Verizon FiOS box like you would ¨a normal POTS phone and have it work. More than likely yes.

I found out you can use just about any VoIP system with a modem. I live in a ¨sh*tty internet area, but I've heard you can use something like a Magicjack+ ¨and it'll work. Even supports decent speeds. (connections close to 33.6kbps)

Guessing your FiOS system is a VoIP box, it should work with a standard modem.

Yeah - I hear you. I have photo meetups once a month or so organized on the web, reminds me of local BBS gettogethers we used to have.

Back in the mid 90's, I went to a few gatherings for Virtual Pleasures, a Major BBS running up in the peninsula. That was the only BBS that I was on that had gatherings. Had one or two gatherings in san mateo, and at least one at Harry's Hoffbrau in santa clara. My BBS at the time was only one or two lines and did not have nearly the following that VP had.

Those were the days. We used to have grandiose arguments on NIRVANAnet(tm) regarding locations, as &TOTSE, the primary hub, was in Walut Creek, realitycheckBBS was in San Francisco, and Burn This Flag was in San Jose. Each had their own opinions on the best location.

I settled most of the arguments by moving next door to Schmidt's Pub (also known as THE PUB) in Albany. Guinness and Fullers ESB on tap, front and back porches, A fireplace for inclement weather, a liberal smoking policy, and we could retire to the BBS room after closing.

I never got around to running short-haul modems out my window and setting up a realitycheckBBS node at THE PUB, a year or so before SFNET did the same thing to coffee shops and laundromats in the Mission district.

Ya, I feel the same way. When I went to find a BBS to look up and find
the old BBS feel, I was like "I have to find a local one... just because,
    that sort of feels right."

we may very well have met when I was a teenager. I grew up in santa clara/
san jose and went to a lot of bbs meets. Burn This Flag was one of my favorites along with Synerchat and The Boneyard and Mariposa BBS.
    Great days. :)

I know exactly what you mean. On my BBS, I decided to have no message ¨networks at all - It's a bit of a risky move these days, but it means that the ¨content there is unique to itself. Because my BBS was born in the early 80's ¨before FIDO was widespread, and we never joined after it became popular, we ¨were always a "local" community. (I ran Project BBS back in the early 80's, ¨and I now run the reincarnated Sanctum BBS, now called Sanctum II BBS)

I figure that BBS systems will lose and gain popularity as time passes. ¨Everything seems to come back sooner or later, even disco and bellbottoms. :)
